“I imagine at one point when Zeynel was studying Persian literature in school he had to learn about the symbolism of flowers, and it got so severe it – form and meaning included – ingrained into his consciousness. Look, me, having been a student of literature myself, I know how learning a text can change and transform you…sometimes for the worst? The best? Who EVEN KNOWS.”
The carpet is my interpretation of a very traditional Usak design: red, gold and black, consisting of geometic florals and repeating medallions.

Zeynel asks, “What kinds of flowers? Any ideas?”
“I am... I'm not sure.” Then Hanim Fatihah remembers. “Oh wait! She had these in her home. I forgot their name, but they have this shape.” She makes the shape of the flowers with her hands… a rectangular formation, bundling smaller shapes within…
Zeynel recognises it. “Hyacinths,” he says, tilting his head towards Ayşe.
This is her cue. Ayşe now knows the perfect carpet.
She tells them, “We do have a carpet with those things in our catalogue actually.”
She has to go into the back room to retrieve it. It is a slightly larger carpet, and more elaborate. It is red. Yellow. Black.
She unfurls it.
It is a grand example of an Uşak carpet. Red, with golden flowers in abstraction, contained within and beyond a row of starry medallions. It exudes confidence, boldness, and beauty, the type that commands attention. It is a carpet made for a pair of newly married nobles.
She says, “Now this… this should be the one.”
She is right. So it is.
