There’s a whole ritual in their praying – there are about five to seven (depending on how you divide it) basic praying positions. This is the first one. A palm at each side of the head, beginning with the takbir and the Surah Fatihah (most importantly), before the second position.

The stylisation of the flowers shift as Zeynel crosses over from side of the page to the other, from Ottoman to European (millefleur). The increased crowding is meant to signal confusion, chaos, and the approach of something foreign (and dangerous).
