She chews over the Zeynel incident the next morning, over a quick breakfast in the upstairs parlour. Oh well, it’s not a huge loss. Most men, besides her father, twin brother and cousins, have no idea what to do with her. This is what she’s realised during the last two months of this marriage business.
She heads downstairs, barely suppressing a yawn. She hopes she will be more awake for a meeting later this morning. It’s with a very important client; a rich woman from several towns over. Both Ayşe and Selim highly anticipate this meeting.
Ayşe pokes her head through the door of the downstairs parlour, smiling. “Good morning everyo…”
She pauses, in surprise, realising that she is interrupting something. Seated around the table is her father, aunt and grandmother. On the table is their family copy of the Quran, placed respectfully on its own stand, and being read aloud by Zeynel. Everyone is now looking at Ayşe, waiting for her next action.
Zeynel quietly waves at her in greeting.
Ayşe spends a second taking this scene in, and looks at her father. She gives Selim an expression of urgency, one that he understands very well. Selim excuses himself, and heads over to his daughter in the hallway.
“Yes, my girl?”
“What's going on, baba?,” she asks, “Isn’t the whole family meant to be in town? Why is he still here?”
Selim rests a hand on his daughter’s arm. “He’s tired from all that travelling. Anyway, he won’t get in the way of our appointment this morning.” He pats her reassuringly.
Ayşe narrows her eyes a little, considering the slight change in circumstances, then huffs. “Sure, but til then, I’ll be in the back with anne.” She turns around towards the direction of the weaving studio, where her mother, her anne, is. No matter how nice that Zeynel is, today she doesn't have the mood to be around him.
She pauses after a few steps, and says loudly and seriously to her father behind her. “Don’t forget to call me when the client is here.”
Selim winks. “Yes, yes, my princess! Promise!”
Ayse shrugs and leaves. Selim returns to the parlour, back to the table.
