In 2016, I said that sensitivity to sunlight is a real condition. Don’t laugh, it’s serious.

The only changes are dialogue and lettering-related (there will be at least several per double-page, for this entire remaster). I gave the sailors more of a rough, salty voice. Speech bubbles are now coloured pink to represent the fact they are not speaking Turkish (which uses the default white bubble) – in this case, Spanish.

Our tall adventurer directs his round friend’s attention to a shadow at the far side of the ship. This shadow is stalking, not a little suspiciously, as if looking for a lost trinket.

The round man rolls his eyes at the shadow. “Jesus! He’s lucky he’s our guest…”, he mumbles. “Or he woulda been tossed overboard long ago.”

The tall man chuckles. “Heh. I’ll call him.”

“Hey! Hey, you!” He yells at the shadow. The shadow turns to face him. Under the moonlight, the shadow melts away into a taller, lankier Turkish man. He carries a scholarly aura, wearing pince-nez glasses pinched over a large and graceful nose, a neat mustache and beard across a soft jawline, and a face always in a state of constant thought. At this moment, it is a face tinged in confusion.

The tall man gestures at the Turkish scholar with a big, sweeping motion of the arm. “Come here!” He calls.

The Turkish scholar comes over. In a warm, gentle voice, speaking fluent Spanish, he asks, “Yes, boys?”

The round man explains. “I haven’t seen ya since yestereve.”

The tall man adds. “Ye, where do you go?”

The scholar stutters. “Urm, well. I have a terrible affliction.”

The tall man narrows his eyes. “That is…?”

For a moment, the scholar is struck by anxiety. This must be a really embarrassing condition to admit. After a huge intake of breath, and with stiff shoulders, he confesses, “You see, I… I am sensitive to sunlight.”

If the scholar had expected sympathy, he would have been disappointed. The two shipmates explode into uncontrollable laughter, their palms slamming onto the ship’s balustrade, howling like monkeys.

The tall man snorts. “Sensitive to sunlight? HA HA HA HA! First time hearing that in all my years at sea!”

The scholar sighs and rolls his eyes. “Don’t laugh. It’s very serious.”

His schoolteacher voice succeeds in snapping the two snipmates out of their mirth.

“Aye, aye, I won't,” promises the tall man, still giggling.

The round man asks, “How do ya avoid the sun, then?”

The tall man leans towards the scholar and prods at the latter’s yellow turban. He asks, a little insensitively, “Is that what the big turban is for?”
